The first and last time I’ve ever allowed myself to be interviewed was in the name of community- grown food. In college, as the manager of my school’s dining cooperatives, I was asked to represent our sourcing ethos for a documentary on local food. I couldn’t have been more thrilled—our co-ops prioritized local and, serving over 600 students, had considerable purchasing power. What better way to give back to our farmers, students and organizers?
The interview was on a thick July night in Ohio, and the cinematographer was dead-set on framing me seated in the grass, by a school building, underneath an enormous fern. He brought a bright, hot light to augment the setting sun. I was working as a reporter that summer, so I felt confident in my understanding of the ideal interview subject—honest, engaging, and natural—and I didn’t want to come off over-prepared. (Passion is key.) So, I didn’t really, you know, formally prepare. I was just caffeinated, overheated and thoroughly excited.
The result was the sweatiest, twitchiest, squintiest interview ever conducted about the socioeconomics of community food systems. When the film screened, the rest of the interviewees were seated calmly behind desks, and there I was, sweat-drenched and cross-legged in the quad, gesturing wildly about our local food systems. (I mostly remember my two-minute soliloquy—an extended metaphor involving an unexpected swing-dancing lesson I’d received from a local grain-grower—broken only by the fern whacking me the eye.) A friend described the interview as “alarmingly passionate.”
The passion’s still here, but I’m moving the other side of the interview table. Which is why I couldn’t be more thrilled to take over as the Editor of Edible Vineyard.
Thanks to the former Editor, Sydney Bender, who was an essential force in guiding this issue and the ones that came before. EV will miss her humor, poise and especially her keen editorial eye, but our loss is The Vineyard Gazette’s distinct gain. (For a word from her, don’t miss “Ice Cream” on page 63.)
We’ve taken the winter to change the look of the magazine, thoughtfully reimagined by our art director. But as always, this issue is about the rich environment that sustains us every day—it’s a nod to the Island’s future (“Jeremy Scheffer,” page 40) and to the wisdom of those who came before us (“Victorian Vineyard,” page 50).
