From State to Beach

I first met Sam and Ali Berlow in 2009 at Offshore Ale in Oak Bluffs. They were in for pizza and root beer, and I was their waitress. The three of us made small talk, and, after discussing the food scene on Martha’s Vineyard, I learned they had recently launched Edible Vineyard, a new food magazine to the island and part of Edible Communities – a nationwide network of local food publications.
Soon after I started work as an office intern. I reported to the Edu Comp building, looked for a time clock (there was none) and spent a couple hours a week stamping subscription envelopes, taste testing meatball subs and doing office coffee runs.
Now, seven years later, we say goodbye to a good friend of ours – Edu Comp – our red brick office home since the magazine’s conception. Many brainstorming sessions, photo shoots, cover wars, ice cream tastings, production parties, naps and laughs took place on the second floor of this building. We thank everyone at Edu Comp, especially Pat, and our neighbors – Lynn Buckmaster-Irwin of Weddings on the Vineyard, and the creative designer Libby Ellis, for sharing stories and holiday snacks with us all year long.
We are excited to bring you this issue of eV from the moving van. We’re not going far – our new office is located less than a mile from our old. New stories, photos and art deadlines are just around the beach!
