Sweet Tomato Hot Sauce

by Ben Gramkowski and Jillian MacLeod

This flavorful alternative to commercial hot sauces goes well with everything from eggs to hummus.

  • 6 medium paste tomatoes, diced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 whole jalapeños, chopped
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. cumin
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. crushed red pepper
  • 1 tsp. safflower oil (or other vegetable oil)

In a large pot, brown crushed red pepper in vegetable oil. This literally takes a second, but brings out a lot of flavor. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Keep at a low boil for about 15 minutes then blend with an immersion blender or allow to cool and blend with a food processor. Return blended sauce to heat and simmer for about 30 minutes or until desired consistency.
