Black & Vanilla Derby

  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 vanilla bean sliced lengthwise and cut into small segments
  • 4 oz. fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 3 oz. Kentucky bourbon

In a small saucepan mix the molasses and vanilla bean with about 3/4 cup of water. Simmer on low, stirring occasionally, until reduced to about half. This syrup will keep in a jar in the fridge for a few weeks, and the vanilla flavor will deepen.

Combine 1 oz. of molasses syrup in a shaker with a lot of ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled glass or serve over a cube or two. Garnish with a grapefruit peel.

Yield: 2 drinks
